Today's reading: Genesis 3:17-19.
"For dust you are and to dust you will return." Those are haunting words for me. We all like to think we will leave something meaningful behind, but these
words speak truth, don’t they? A key part of our Lenten journey is the realization
that we are not all that we think we are. Only then can I
understand why I need a Savior.
We struggle because of sin, and because we choose to listen to what the world says we should do instead of what God says we should do.
ReplyDeleteAny meaning we leave behind, whether while we are here or after we are gone, is because of what God does with us, and not because of what we do with us.
Even when I'm not struggling, it's not because I'm great. It's because God is great.
So maybe Lent is John 3:30 - He must increase, but I must decrease.
These are the most humbling of words: "From dust you have come and to dust you shall return." These words remind me of three realities that are true: my sin that is ever before me as chief among sinners, unholy and completely corrupt; my mortal nature that will indeed die because of my sins; and my life that has been marked with the Cross of Christ forever, completely and totally forgiven, granted the gift of eternal life in heaven, and set free to serve the Lord with gladness and joy.
ReplyDeleteThis text reminds me that our journey of faith will not be an easy one because we have been born into a fallen and sinful generation. It also reminds me that no matter how hard I strive for something, I will not have success without God. I need Him and His grace to cover me. I am nothing without His presence in my life, simply dust. But with God, I have everything I need.
